Episode IV: A New Hope

[Password protection now removed and comments closed]

You might know that over the last year I’ve been compiling a list of all the blogs related to the Transforming Legal Aid consultation and the justice cuts. If you’ve been given the password to read this page then at least one of your blog posts are included too and I’d be grateful if you’d keep what I have to say here to yourself for the time being – professional trust and all that

What’s this about

I’m asking for your permission to reproduce your blog post(s) concerning the Transforming Legal Aid consultation/justice cuts (those you published prior to the 27th Feb this year)

Who has agreed so far and invites status (edit: now final list)

For the last two months I’ve been compiling all the blogs written during the consultation period, formatting, optimising and turning them into a book – or more precisely, an ebook (though it wouldn’t be difficult for me to produce a print ready manuscript now too). Its working title is ‘Saving Justice’

It’s cross-platform and can be viewed on whatever smartphone or gadget you have: Kindle (all types, including Paperwhite, Fire and DX), iPhones and iPad (through the Kindle app (.mobi version) or iBooks (.epub version), other tablets and Android smart-phones and so on. It can also be read on computers and Macs through ebook reader apps

With your permission I intend to finish sorting it out and publish it within the next two months – I think it will take me that long getting everyone’s permission – but I want it ready in advance of the anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta on 15th June (my birthday too). I want to make it available as a free download [NB: see update #5 below in comments – issues with Amazon not allowing ‘free forever’ – will be using Apple iBooks as they do. A cheap paid version on Amazon is also possible]

We’ll need to agree the wording of the copyright statement at some point – something like ‘remains with the authors’ perhaps. We can revisit this later or feel free to give your views in the comments below

Why bother

It raises awareness and I think opens up a potential new avenue of interest in the Save UK Justice story, the Justice Alliance and what’s going on with legal aid and in our justice system right now. Personally, I think through all your perspectives it gives incredible insight and is likely to attract many new people to look at the issues. It’s also just incredible to read – it’s fascinating, really moving and makes you want to find out more. I can’t emphasise enough just how powerful it comes across when you start going through all the individual blogs coordinated into book format

It’s also worth mentioning that using whatever gadget you happen to be reading the book on you can use the inbuilt features to do things like search the book for keywords, particular authors, mentions, people, topics etc. You can count frequencies, create statistics pulled from the accumulation of all your work from all over the web but in one place. It’s a historian/researcher’s dream

A bit of detail on content and layout

Each of your posts in the book links back to the original on your blog so it will be useful for your own traffic and raising awareness of what you write about. Any links you included have been reformatted and work so readers can access whatever other content you originally included or referred to in their browser whilst reading the book. The book also includes all your pictures, image links to the videos you created, podcasts and so on. In other words, it is what you wrote as is but presented in rich ebook format (currently .mobi and .epub). Each article throughout is sequential, date order, broken down by month, running from April 2013 when the consultation was first announced through to February 2014 when the government gave its decision

It’s just the blogs. Other than a short introduction explaining what the book is there’s no narrative from me or anyone else

It’s the biggest piece of techie/legal hybrid work I’ve ever undertaken and has, to be honest, been a major ball-breaker

What next

For now I’m just floating this to a few of you whose work is included who I know on Twitter or elsewhere. I’d like some feedback really – what do you reckon? Most importantly, would you be happy letting me include your blog posts? Basically, are you in? I guess the next stage, if people are up for it, will be to let people check their posts in the draft, just in case they don’t want certain ones included or would like me to fine tune them. Anyway, that’s not for now

Example section

Here’s a little example as a PDF. It’s only a very basic PDF but you should get the rough idea – beginning bits, a chunk of the articles and the end bit. I’ve not bothered formatting it for PDF so it’s not perfect eg articles don’t start on their own pages as in the ebook for one. I’ve taken the full .mobi manuscript I linked to last night down as it could get messy with lots of versions kicking around and this page was also getting a bit technical with my stuff on Kindle Previewer etc. If the two people I gave the link to this page to last night have the copy please don’t circulate it

However, happy to send the whole thing to anyone if they do want to see it, just let me know

Can you reply below with what you think so others can see where we’re going with this?

Or let me know via Twitter @ilegal or email theteam@ilegal.org.uk

Thanks for reading

UPDATE #2 (Sunday 7.52am)

I’ve started keeping tabs on who has been asked and who has replied. You can view the spreadsheet online (edit: now final list). If anyone knows any of those who haven’t been contacted yet by all means invite them as I invited you (don’t forget the password). Just let me know so I can update the spreadsheet (email or DM me: theteam@ilegal.org.uk or @ilegal). Otherwise, I’ll start trying to contact them directly through their blogs/emails during the week

I was communicating with a couple of you last night and I confirm that I will make a complete draft available prior to publication so you have a final opportunity to be reassured (that this isn’t a cunning Grayling-esque scheme) and pull out if you’re not happy with the final book. I’m confident you won’t so happy to be fully transparent throughout

Thanks again everyone, especially those who’ve commented below. It makes it all the more worthwhile that you can see where I’m going with this!

I’ll leave all future updates as ‘comments’ below. You can subscribe to the comments to this post to keep up with what’s going on

UPDATE #6: THE COVER (scroll down through the comments for previous updates)

Feel free to comment – it’s only a screen grab, the actual one used will be high res. It’s not your traditional legalish type cover – I don’t like them, they’re only attractive to legalish type people. I think this has broad appeal and given it’s about getting people to look who might not usually bother, I reckon it’s the way to go. That said, I have a terrible habit of changing my mind so don’t be surprised if you see an entirely different cover in a week or so!

Thank you for including me in this idea! Although times are hard, it has been extremely positive to see the profession (& Twitter) unite. We have come a long way since April 2013, but still there is some more fighting to be done.

I am more than happy to be involved in this ‘movement’. Just let me know what the next steps are. Let’s make it happen!

    UPDATE #3 (St Patrick’s Day 7.36am)

Thanks everyone who’s been in touch so far. It’s really coming together! As well as the comments here I’ve been getting a lot of contact via Twitter DMs especially. Big thanks to @saveUKjustice for all the work behind the scenes and Dan Bunting for some great suggestions

I’ve updated the PDF example download above. Reason being, I’ve tempered the foreword somewhat so people can also agree to be included without feeling they necessarily support or are part of the campaign. There are a few bloggers on the list who have written excellent stuff but, I imagine, wouldn’t want to feel they are aligned with something simply by being included

Also, I’ve decided I’ll add updates here as comments so I’d recommend you subscribe to the comments for this post and that way you’ll be kept in the loop without having to remember to check back. We may as well use the comments to discuss stuff too, that way everyone else can see what’s going on and we have a record of what we’ve agreed

Happy St. Patrick’s day, everyone. I’m absolutely full of cold and feel terrible. Ho hum :-/

    UPDATE #4 Tuesday 18th March 18.09pm

I’ve just completed another full edit over the last few days. Mainly layout and consistency changes in terms of titles and text within individual pieces. Knocking out obvious errors eg lack of spaces between words, too many spaces, spelling mistakes etc. Also a lot of time spent embedding hyperlinks into the text itself (so they’re still clickable) rather than lots of unsightly URLs.

The book, if a paper-back, would be 919 pages long. To give you an idea of size this is shorter than The Lord of The Rings, for example, which comes in at over 1,000 pages. It’s still a lot of pages though!

Next on the list: I have to go through it again and remove, format and then reinsert each image. There are quite a few blog posts with header images and also a number of posts made up almost entirely of images eg from the protests. All images within the book need to be less than 127KB in size and should really be JPEGs (a lot are PNG files at the minute for some reason). This avoids Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) re-compressing the images themselves, which can cause problems with the upload and processing. It’s also a good idea anyway as it’s the images that impact the file size – at the moment the whole book is running just short of 30MB. Although this is lower than the 50MB KDP upload limit, it’s still pretty massive to my mind – I’d like to get it to half that at least and ideally a third of that or less without adverse impact on image quality. The smaller the file size the easier it is for your gadgets to process on opening and, people don’t necessarily like all their space on their smart-phones being taken up by big books, however interesting they are!

I’ve also begun thinking about the cover and sorting out the standard pages at the front and back – acknowledgements, copyright statement and so on. I would be grateful for any suggestions on the copyright statement I should include – is it sufficient to say that copyright in the individual pieces remains with the original authors under whatever terms they post them under? Is there a nice/sensible way of writing this? Should the book have its own copyright identity in addition to that?

Everything is on target and, fingers crossed, going even better than planned. I think it will be ready for publishing within a couple of weeks all being well. I’ll make the it available to everyone for comments first, however. I suspect it will take longer than that chasing the remaining people who haven’t agreed to inclusion anyway, even though I’m blown away with how quickly we’ve got people onboard – @saveUKjustice deserves a special mention for that! We may have to lose some people from the final book if we can’t get them onboard but, even as it stands right now, we’ve got enough quality content to publish as is

Feel free to reply if any thoughts, otherwise I’ll keep at it and update again shortly or if anything else interesting comes up.

    UPDATE #5

Amazon doesn’t allow ‘free forever’ publishing. It allows you to make it free for periods of time but at least a minimum price the rest of the time. However, Apple ibooks does allow you to publish ‘free forever’ so I’ve set up a publisher account with Apple. It’s annoying with Amazon though as I think their book market is much bigger. I guess there’s nothing to stop me just offering it as a free download – hosting the .mobi file myself as a download from my server – to everyone as well anyway. Only thing with that is it wouldn’t then get any exposure in the Kindle bookstore

Back on Apple, I can go straight through iTunes Connect to publish on Apple: https://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/content-providers/book-faq.html But, I’ll have to upgrade the OS on my Mac to Mavericks so I can use iBooks Producer, which is their delivery system – it’s OS 10.8 minimum and my old baby is still Snow Leopard (10.6). It’s doable but a lot of graft all in. Right, that’s the project for the next couple of weeks! I’ll also check out Barnes and Noble, Google ebooks, Kobo, Aldiko and Sony too. Might as well put it everywhere!

I’ll carry on preparing the relevant drafts and then put up a separate post on publishing strategy across the different platforms shortly

Sounds like an excellent idea and clearly you know your way around the technology involved, unlike myself. UPDATE #7

Spent the last few days editing – I hate editing! I’ve been through the whole thing twice sorting out typos, formatting errors and so on and am now on the third run through optimising it where I can to reduce file size. For the techies, for reviewing I’ve been using Apple’s Book Proofer app, which allows you to make edits and see how they turn out by viewing the book ‘as is’ on your iPhone/iPad without having to sync each time. Also, Kindle Previewer is pretty good for reviewing the same thing but on the Kindle platform. Also been doing some work on the graphic so I can include a high resolution cover that will translate well into the varying display sizes

I’ve also been doing a lot of work going through the Apple iBooks store requirements. It comes across a lot more complicated than Amazon. You’re also not allowed to upload test versions as it publishes (or at least submits for review then publishes) automatically. Guess I’d better get it right first time then!

The biggest priority, if anyone wants to chip in, is to get those on the spreadsheet who haven’t responded yet to get in touch and let me know whether I can include their stuff. For example, anyone know where Guy Gozem is or when he’ll be back around? Also, anyone know Iamcallednick or Fatcat Lawyer? There are a few on there I’m struggling with so please help out if you can

    Thanks all

    UPDATE #9

Since the PDF draft above I’ve now been through the whole thing again – Tim Forte spotted a few typos so I put it into Word and knocked all the other ones I’d missed too. It nearly blew my computer up – it’s never had to copy/paste a volume of text equivalent to a large book in one go before. It was interesting I suppose – I got lots of exotic warnings flashing up on my Mac I’d never seen before. Anyway, done now and looking much better for it

I’ve hung back a little too to see how the CBA issue goes as I’m thinking of putting a brief timeline of key events following the end of the consultation into the Epilogue. They’ve got another couple of weeks but I’m going to be merciless with the very small few who haven’t responded and take it as an opportunity to keep the file size down without impacting on quality

Nearly done now and publication ETA ahead of schedule: mid-April. If anyone wants to see an updated PDF of the whole thing DM me your email on Twitter @ilegal or email me: theteam@ilegal.org.uk or leave a reply here

    UPDATE #10

OK, apart from a couple of people who might yet come back to earlier messages I sent them we’re done on the list and the contributor spreadsheet is now offline. It’s the final stages now – here’s what’s left to do:

    1. Finish going through and making sure each link in each title post links to the original blog or, where that particular blog post has been deleted, to the ‘about’ or ‘home’ page of the blogger. I’m half way through June at the moment so it should take me a couple of hours today to finish this all being well
    2. Finalise the formatting, especially in titles. This is what is taking a lot of time. Each time I adjust the formatting I have to produce a new epub (Apple) and mobi (Amazon) version of the book to see how it comes out
    3. Wait for the outcome of the CBA barrister ballot on the 9th. This isn’t essential but I’d like to include it in the timeline in the epilogue
    4. Once the above has been done, upload it to Apple and Amazon. I’ve no idea how this will go. Apple especially is notoriously hard work and I’m using an older (v2.9) version of iTunes Producer (you have to use this to upload it). If it doesn’t work I’ll need to upgrade my operating system on my Mac to allow me to use the latest version (v3.0). I’m really hoping I don’t have to do this as the knock-on compatability hassle with every other bit of software I have on here will cause me no end of problems
    5. Create the widgets to allow me and others to embed the book into blogs and websites. This looks pretty straightforward…

The publishing plan: (1) epub version on Apple as a free book – this is the main ‘product’ so to speak and what I’ll be plugging to everyone (2) mobi version on Amazon as a cheap download (they don’t allow free forever books and minimum cost is dictated by the file size of the book when downloaded (3) the same Amazon mobi version but in my public Dropbox for free download. This is aimed at anyone who can’t access the free Apple version but still wants it for free on their Kindle or whatever without having to buy it from Amazon. Buying the Amazon version will then be optional and only aimed at anyone who wants to make a contribution to the work creating the book

Right, things to do so better get on with it. Oh, by the way, I dropped my iPhone down the toilet (don’t ask) and it is now sitting in a bag of rice on my desk. As I’m in the Twitter login verification thing I can’t get access to Twitter until either my phone starts working again or Twitter Support sorts me out. Can’t tell you how p*ssed off I am about this but there you go. Anyway, if anyone wants to contact me please EMAIL: theteam@ilegal.org.uk or leave a REPLY HERE on this blog

Thanks all and cheers to anyone who has been keeping up with my rambling trials and tribulations on this particular blog post

    UPDATE #11: PUBLISHED TO APPLE

It’s done! I uploaded the completed book to Apple this lunchtime. Assuming it gets through Apple’s review process, it should be available for download in a couple of weeks at best but could be considerably longer depending on how busy they are. I’d say May sometime. Hopefully all will be well with the review process. Once it’s live and available for download I’ll let everyone know

For the techies, iTune Producer (2.9) was fine. It kicked me out with a few validation errors first time I tried though – turns out a couple of images I’d dragged and dropped into one of the pieces weren’t listed in the OPF manifest. Can’t work out why it picked these two though as lots of the images I optimised were included this way *scratches head* Anyway, basically I’m pleased it didn’t identify anything more serious and once I’d repaired the epub it was all sorted

Still some way to go then but, getting there. Cheers all. I’m off to the pub now for a drink to celebrate. Have a nice weekend any of you reading this 🙂
